Last Letter

She read it once again
'Dear mam' For so he began
His litany of mud and rain

Trench letter stub written,
Scrubby half literate scrawl
Itching where lice had bitten.

Talked of a big push slated
Of 'over the top' next day.
Pointless that she had waited.
